The discussions focused on areas such as small modular reactors (SMR) and electricity supply for artificial intelligence (AI). During his meeting with Chey Tae-won, Gates discussed strategies to address the growing electricity demand driven by the proliferation of AI data centers, the development direction of next-generation nuclear energy, and the potential for U.S.-South Korea nuclear energy collaboration. SK and SK Innovation jointly invested a total of $250 million in TerraPower in 2022, becoming the company's second-largest shareholder. On the same day, SK Innovation signed a business cooperation agreement with TerraPower for sodium-cooled small modular reactors (sodium SMR). Gates also met with Chung Ki-sun and Hyundai Engineering & Construction CEO Lee Han-joo to review the progress of previously signed commercial agreements.
