Just saw a lot of friends reposting, saying X has a new algorithm. I took a closer look, and this algorithm isn’t actually new. The underlying Phoenix (Grok Transformer) architecture has been in use since January 2026, all the way until now. Today’s update is just about making this algorithm open-source, not introducing a new one. What I think is more important is that X launched a tool called Under the Hood. From now on, eligible accounts can directly see what tags the system has applied to their accounts and posts, including which tags might limit exposure in the For You feed. Plus, the data can be downloaded. This is super helpful because in the past, many friends often asked whether their accounts were being shadowbanned, whether they triggered some kind of penalty, or why content with the same quality used to get hundreds of thousands of views but now only gets a few thousand. There was no way to prove whether it was an issue with the content itself or if the account had been flagged with some kind of restriction tag by the system. Under the Hood is specifically designed for this purpose—like figuring out what type of content is most likely to trigger restriction tags, which tags have the biggest impact on exposure, how long a tag lasts, whether deleting a post helps, and whether recommendations recover after an account is restored. These insights are especially important for creators working hard on X. Currently, this feature is still in testing. Accounts need to meet certain criteria: they must have been registered for at least a year and have posted at least 10 pieces of content in the past month. From there, eligible accounts will be randomly selected for access.
