Recently, the former Coinbase team launched B3IQ through B3 Labs @ b3labs, and I think this idea is quite interesting.
In the context of the booming AI environment, the most discussed topic currently is computing power,
Computing power is the foundation and cornerstone of AI. Many friends around me have been tinkering with computing power and machines since last year, earning a lot of money,
But in the past, computing power and GPU were needed, and there were only two ways:
1) Either rent cloud computing power, the machine will never be yours;
2) Either spend a lot of money to buy a machine and then worry about the computer room, heat dissipation, and maintenance.
B3IQ has made a third choice in the middle: about 30% down payment to buy NVIDIA GPU → B3 helps you host it → runs it yourself when you need it → automatically rents out computing power when idle → the machine belongs to you after paying the money.
I think the most crucial step is actually the latter one: you have the machine and can only sell the unused time.
I ran the official website calculator and found that a set of 2 × H200 NVLs in the picture costs approximately 88300 US dollars. Based on an 80% utilization rate and current computing power prices, the monthly net income is estimated to be around 2397 US dollars, with a static payback period of about 37 months.
Of course, this is just a calculation, GPU rental, utilization, and depreciation will all change, and cannot be understood as a guaranteed profit.
But this mindset has indeed changed: in the past, it was about spending money to buy computing power, now it is about owning computing power and generating cash flow from idle computing power.
My understanding is that this model is very attractive to many universities or hospitals because their GPU has a more practical value: sensitive data does not need to be handed over to third parties, medical cancer research, proprietary models, and even diplomatic simulations can all run directly on their own machines.
When you see this, you may feel that his rental cloud computing power is a bit similar to before, but in fact, it is two completely opposite directions to cloud computing back then:
Cloud computing is: I do not own machines, only purchase usage rights; What B3IQ wants to do is: I own a machine and just sell the unused time.
But rather a trend behind it: Compute is becoming an asset class
In the era of AI, computing power may no longer be just a service we purchase, but will truly become a means of production that we can own, and it will become increasingly scarce in the future, like land, gold, and Bitcoin, becoming more valuable as it becomes scarce.
