When it comes to controlling the Strait of Hormuz, I honestly think what Trump said doesn’t make much sense. Sure, the U.S. has stronger naval power, but destruction is always easier than construction. Right now, Iran can use drones, small boats, and other methods to attack ships. They don’t even need to sink them—just causing panic is enough. So, even though Trump claims to control the Strait of Hormuz, the traffic through it is still very low. Looking at the hard data, I don’t believe the U.S. has real control over Hormuz. If Iran doesn’t open the Strait, there’s almost nothing the U.S. can do about it. Just look at the current oil prices. If the U.S. truly had control, prices would’ve already dropped back to around $70 per barrel. That said, the U.S. has indeed been blocking Iran’s access to the Strait, significantly reducing Iran’s oil exports and driving up inflation domestically.
