A grocery store CEO was fired for being “too good” to his employees. In response, 25,000 workers across 71 stores emptied the shelves and refused to work until the board brought him back. Within six weeks, sales had plunged 95%.
Imagine having a boss who cares so much about his employees that the entire workforce shuts everything down just to get him back...
The viral story refers to Arthur T. Demoulas, CEO of Market Basket. In 2014, he was fired by the board during a power struggle over employee benefits and profit-sharing. In response, 25,000 non-union workers and loyal customers launched a six-week protest and boycott. Shelves emptied across 71 stores and sales plunged by about 90%, eventually forcing the board to let Demoulas buy back the company.(Historic Vids)
