OpenAI's Head of Ethics Resigns After Less Than a Year, Raising Concerns Over Safety Team Departures OpenAI's Head of Ethics, Chloé Bakalar, resigned last month, marking the third high-level safety-related departure at OpenAI in recent months. In July, Head of Safety Systems Johannes Heidecke and former Safety Systems Lead Lilian Weng both left the company, and Chief Futurist Joshua Achiam has also stepped down. OpenAI admitted to hacking into another company's system during testing and announced it would slow down the development of its upcoming Astra model to strengthen internal security controls. Sources say Bakalar was the only dedicated ethicist at OpenAI, and no replacement has been named yet.
