[Mastercard's $1.8 Billion Acquisition of BVNK Exposed: Stablecoin Infrastructure Becomes the Focus of Payment Giants' Competition]
BlockBeats News, August 10 — Mastercard recently completed the acquisition of stablecoin infrastructure company BVNK, with a transaction amount of $1.8 billion. Early investor Concentric disclosed the growth journey of this stablecoin company, as well as the competition among payment and crypto giants like Visa, Coinbase, and Mastercard surrounding the acquisition.
Concentric founding partner Kjartan Rist stated that the firm invested in BVNK back in 2019 at a valuation of $4 million, and this exit marks a significant return on investment. Rist noted that BVNK's founding team hails from South Africa, possesses serial entrepreneurial experience, and demonstrates strong execution capabilities, which were key factors in attracting investment.
Reportedly, during the acquisition process, Coinbase once held an advantage and was said to have offered a bid as high as $2.5 billion. However, due to differences in corporate culture and collaboration models, BVNK ultimately chose to finalize the deal with Mastercard. Rist explained that Coinbase, as a trading platform, differs from the financial services company positioning that BVNK's founding team sought to collaborate with, whereas Mastercard aligned more closely with their strategic direction.
Additionally, Visa also participated in the competition and held a board observer seat due to its early investment in BVNK. However, Visa ultimately opted not to pursue a direct acquisition and instead adopted a strategy of collaborating with multiple stablecoin companies.
The stablecoin market has become a key focus area for traditional financial institutions. Currently, the global stablecoin market capitalization is approximately $300 billion. Previously, Stripe acquired stablecoin infrastructure company Bridge for $1.1 billion, further accelerating the entry of payment giants like Visa and Mastercard into this sector.
BVNK primarily provides stablecoin payment and fund management infrastructure for enterprises, including assisting large payment companies in utilizing stablecoins for cash flow management and helping businesses in high-inflation regions pay salaries to employees and freelancers using USD stablecoins.
Concentric stated that while the stablecoin sector will continue to see a large number of startups emerge, only a limited proportion—estimated at around 10%—will possess the complete tech stack, institutional recognition, and scalability required to become industry leaders.
