《Trading Chatroom》
--- Can you handle the pressure in trading to achieve big results?
I’ve realized there’s a very real issue in trading:
The amount of drawdown you’re willing to endure determines whether you can hold onto a truly big trend.
A lot of people can accept a 5% drop after buying in,
but can’t handle a 10% pullback after gaining 30%.
So, they stubbornly hold on during losses, but panic and sell when they’re in profit.
That’s why I want to ask everyone a very straightforward question:
If a trade has a maximum unrealized profit of 50%, but then pulls back 20% from the peak while the trend remains intact, what would you do?
A: Take the profit immediately
B: Sell half and hold the rest
C: As long as the trend isn’t broken, keep holding
D: Can’t handle a pullback of more than 10%
If it were you, how much profit pullback could you endure?
Let me share my experience and thoughts:
(1) First and foremost, you need to correctly judge the short- to mid-term trend direction. If your trend judgment is wrong, talking about enduring drawdowns is pointless. Many people stick to their positions and endure drawdowns, only to end up with margin calls or severe losses before finally cutting their losses!
(2) So, predicting the short- to mid-term trend direction is the first step in trading. If your prediction is correct, enduring drawdowns can lead to big results. If your prediction is wrong, close your position promptly to take profit or cut losses, and patiently wait for the next opportunity.
(3) Discipline is crucial! My maximum tolerance for drawdowns is 10%. If it exceeds that, I accept the loss and exit—no stubborn holding or refusal to admit mistakes. Cutting losses in time is like a prodigal son turning back; it’s invaluable. Cutting losses is also a trading strategy and part of trading discipline.
