According to *Le Parisien*, since 2026, nearly 80 cases of kidnappings, illegal detentions, or extortion targeting cryptocurrency holders have occurred in France. Additionally, incidents of criminal groups "targeting the wrong people" due to outdated leaked data are on the rise. On July 21, an IT engineer in Bry-sur-Marne, Val-de-Marne, faced his third kidnapping attempt in six months.
Three men entered his residential property in the early hours and contacted their handler via video call. However, they left after seeing a sign at the door that read, "Wrong target, no cryptocurrency in this house." The report noted that the man's name and address were still listed in previously leaked Waltio user data, even though he no longer holds any crypto assets. It was also reported that criminals cross-reference leaked data from crypto platforms with other personal information and sell complete identity and asset profiles on the dark web for around €15 each.
