I joined X back in 2021 when it was still called Twitter and was just posting stuff. Back then, there was no such thing as revenue—at most, there was a tipping feature. I don’t know about others, but I personally didn’t receive a single cent (maybe because I wasn’t very good at it). Creator revenue on X only started in 2023, with payouts beginning in July. Honestly, compared to YouTube, Twitter’s approach back then was way behind. YouTube started incentivizing creators with targeted invitations as early as 2007, and by 2012, they lowered the threshold so regular creators could apply too. Anyway, I’m getting off track. Sharing opinions is often something people do spontaneously. For example, back in the day on platforms like Zhihu, Mop, Tianya—especially Tianya—there were so many talented creators who wrote amazing novels for free. When I was at work, most of my slacking-off time was spent on Tianya, and it was thanks to those talented creators that I started writing myself. If your output is solely for income, chances are you won’t enjoy it much, and you might not do it very well either. Personally, I think creating content should first and foremost make you happy and fulfill your own needs. If you can earn revenue while doing that, then that’s the best-case scenario.
