Big news in the crypto world
$89 million stolen from a cold wallet
This time, it’s not an exchange collapse.
It’s one of the things everyone always thought was "the safest":
Hardware cold wallets.
Recently, COLDCARD reported a security incident. Some older firmware versions were found to have insufficient randomness when generating Seeds.
What does this mean?
Under normal circumstances, your mnemonic phrase is almost impossible to guess.
But if the randomness of the Seed itself is compromised,
Attackers could drastically reduce the astronomical search range,
Eventually calculate the private key,
And directly transfer the BTC from the cold wallet.
What’s even scarier is:
This isn’t because you clicked on a phishing link.
It’s not because you shared your mnemonic phrase with someone.
It’s not because an exchange went bankrupt.
It’s because the Seed you thought was safely stored might have been at risk from the moment it was generated.
But let’s make one thing clear:
⚠️ This does NOT mean Bitcoin has been hacked.
Bitcoin’s blockchain has not been breached,
Nor has BTC been cracked by quantum computers.
The issue lies with:
The Seed generation implementation of specific hardware wallets.
The real warning this incident gives to all crypto players is:
"Not your keys, not your coins" is only half the story.
What if your keys weren’t secure from the moment they were born?
Exchange risks, smart contract risks, hardware wallet risks...
In Crypto,
The risks you need to manage have never been limited to just price fluctuations. ₿
