"Behind every top AI company, there's a 'Super #2'"
Here's an interesting pattern in the AI industry: the tech genius focuses on the model, while a 'Super #2' takes care of everything else—fundraising, hiring, legal, policy, commercialization, sales, and organizational management.
Anthropic has Daniela Amodei (Co-founder/President), who was Stripe's founding recruiting officer and later served as VP of Safety and Policy at OpenAI. She oversees finance, legal, hiring, communications, policy, GTM, enterprise sales, and safety operations. Her brother, Dario Amodei, is the CEO, focusing on the technical side.
OpenAI has Fidji Simo (AGI Deployment CEO, starting July 2026), responsible for product, business, and operations, with the COO, CFO, and CPO reporting to her. She previously led Facebook at Meta and later became Instacart's CEO. Sam Altman focuses on technology and strategy.
SpaceX/xAI has Gwynne Shotwell (President and COO), managing commercial sales, government relations, Starlink operations, legal, and HR. She joined SpaceX early on and became President in 2008, taking on the role of xAI President in February 2026. Elon Musk serves as CEO and CTO.
DeepMind had Lila Ibrahim as COO (later transitioning to Chief AI Readiness Officer), overseeing operations, governance and ethics, policy, communications, and People & Culture. She came from Intel and later served as COO at Kleiner Perkins before shifting to policy in 2026.
These 'Super #2s' often bring operational expertise from established companies, making complex organizations run smoothly.
Tech founders focus on breakthroughs, while operational leaders handle execution. This might just be the secret formula for top AI companies' success.
