Mini evening update on Clarity: It’s a waiting game in every sense of the term.
Waiting for the White House to come back with a response and/or counter to the bipartisan ethics counterproposal, and waiting to see whether Leader Thune will file cloture on the motion to proceed to the Clarity Act tonight.
As @BrendanPedersen just reported, there’s worry from both sides that a failed cloture vote will bring the whole year-long effort down. But, there’s also big pressure from industry and GOP to get to it before they leave.
Plus, the yield issue is becoming a bigger sticking point, as more members want changes to the text and the Wall Street Journal op-ed gave them more cover to push for them.
Growing sense is that if cloture isn’t filed tonight then it won’t happen before recess.(Eleanor Terrett)
