This whole situation has escalated to the point where the Gate CEO personally stepped in, responding and putting $3.4 million on the TRC Tron chain, promising double compensation if it’s ultimately determined that Gate is at fault. This kind of attitude and confidence is commendable. But as of today, it’s already a lose-lose situation. Users have lost real money and are under immense financial and psychological pressure. Gate, on the other hand, has caused significant market panic due to its initial communication and handling of the issue. However, based on the reserve funds disclosed today and the news from Cointelegraph, it seems there hasn’t been any substantial impact. Personally, I think when something like this happens, platforms should consider the users’ situation more. Under normal circumstances, who would risk millions of dollars in real assets to test this? But data breaches are indeed a frustrating and unpredictable issue. The problem is that both sides were too eager to shift responsibility at the start. Especially in a bear market, where retail investors are already losing money, the last thing they want is to feel their funds on the platform are unsafe. If the platform’s response is too aggressive or the investigation process lacks transparency, it’s easy to trigger even greater panic. A more reasonable approach would have been to involve an independent third party early on to clarify the facts and responsibilities. If it’s ultimately confirmed that Gate is at fault, then they should naturally bear full compensation responsibility. If the primary responsibility doesn’t lie with Gate, it’s still worth reviewing whether the platform’s initial communication, assistance in the investigation, and user care were adequate. After all, many in the market are watching this unfold. Regardless of who’s ultimately at fault, even if the stolen funds can’t be recovered, I believe Gate could still provide some compensation out of user care. I’m not sure if Gate has a dedicated user protection fund for handling extreme security incidents, nor do I know if other exchanges have one. But for this industry to truly mature, it can’t just rely on users bearing all the risks themselves. Large exchanges also need to step up and show responsibility and leadership. At the end of the day, for all exchanges, it really comes down to two things: security and providing great products and services.
