Wu Blockchain has learned that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has accepted a review request submitted by CME Group (a major U.S. derivatives exchange operator) and will re-examine its previous decision to approve the listing of cash-settled Bitcoin index options (QBTC) on Nasdaq PHLX. The SEC had approved the related rule change through an authorization process on May 22, but after CME raised objections in June, the approval decision was automatically suspended. QBTC cannot be launched until the SEC commissioners complete the review. CME argues that Bitcoin is a commodity, and options directly tied to its price should be regulated by the CFTC, not the SEC. If this view is upheld, Nasdaq may need to reapply under the CFTC framework or adjust the product structure.
