Wow, Wow, a YC startup company with only 6 people has developed a cargo rocket that can deliver 250 kilograms of goods 750 kilometers away in 15 minutes!
Containers can be launched wherever they are transported, without the need for any runways or infrastructure, and landing sites are not chosen!
Hop Aero named it Rook.
It sounds like installing a rocket engine for FedEx, but what Rook really needs to solve is not ordinary express delivery, but the increasingly fragile supply lines in modern warfare.
Airports, ports, and large logistics centers are usually the first targets to be attacked after a conflict erupts. Even if the transport plane is still present, runway damage, air defense threats, pilot fatigue, and parts shortages may quickly render traditional air transportation ineffective.
Rook's idea is to compress the launch system, rocket, and ground support equipment into a standard container.
When needed, take off vertically, fly along a suborbital trajectory, reach hypersonic speed during re-entry, then autonomously decelerate and land vertically. The company also claims to use propellants that can be stored for a long time and can be on standby in containers for up to one year, launching within minutes of receiving orders.
It cannot transport tanks, nor can it replace C-17 transport planes.
But 250 kilograms is enough to hold a swarm of drones, electronic warfare equipment, interceptors, satellite components, critical maintenance parts, or emergency medical supplies.
The real determinant of whether a system can continue to operate on the battlefield is often not dozens of tons of ordinary goods, but the hundreds of kilograms of core components that cannot be replaced in a timely manner.
This also explains why the US Air Force is willing to give $1.25 million to a six person company.
According to publicly available contract data, Hop Aero was awarded the SBIR Phase II contract by the US Air Force Research Laboratory in September 2025, with a maximum amount of $1249909. The project is named "ROOK: Rapid Operations Over Kilometers".
It is not an order for purchasing finished products, but a research and development contract, but at least it proves that Rook corresponds to real military needs.
The US Air Force launched the Rocket Cargo project as early as 2021, hoping to use commercial rockets to deliver 50 to 100 tons of supplies globally within one hour.
SpaceX and other companies are addressing intercontinental heavy transportation, while Hop Aero has chosen another direction: reducing capacity to 250 kilograms and range to 750 kilometers in exchange for container deployment, rapid response, and lower infrastructure requirements.
It is more like a hypersonic 'battlefield delivery vehicle'.
However, the promotional video showcases the final form, and the technological progress is still far from there.
Currently, Hop Aero has completed:
Engine and igniter hot test;
Completed small-scale prototype tethered flight at Oklahoma Spaceport;
Establish your own testing ground;
Obtained a research and development contract from the United States Air Force.
The unfinished part is even more crucial:
There is no full-size Rook for free flight;
Fly 750 kilometers without cargo;
No demonstration of hypersonic reentry;
No proof of precise soft landing in complex terrain;
The overall weight, engine thrust, reuse frequency, and single task cost have not been disclosed.
Pay special attention to a number that is easily overlooked:
Flying 750 kilometers for 15 minutes corresponds to an average speed of approximately 3000 kilometers per hour, which is about 2.4 times the speed of sound.
The so-called "hypersonic" refers to a rocket reaching more than 5 times the speed of sound during some flight or re-entry phases, but it does not mean that it flies at 5 times the speed of sound throughout the entire journey. This is not considered a data contradiction, but it indicates that the currently released task indicators are still very simplified.
Rook's real challenge is not 'flying fast'.
There is mature technology for accelerating rockets to hypersonic speeds. Even more difficult is to ensure that a rocket carrying cargo can accurately identify terrain, avoid obstacles, and safely land on unprepared ground after undergoing high heat flow re-entry.
Finally, it must be cheap enough, otherwise it can only become an expensive military special tool.
In terms of commercial markets, Hop Aero targets the aerospace, automotive, pharmaceutical, offshore oil, and high-end manufacturing industries. For these industries, stopping production for an hour could result in losses of hundreds of thousands or even $2 million, and for them, paying a high price to transport a critical component makes commercial sense.
But for a long time, Rook is likely to remain a "military priority, commercial supplement".
Regulation is also an unavoidable issue. A hypersonic vehicle that suddenly takes off from a container and flies along a ballistic trajectory has radar features similar to missile altitude. Cross border flights require prior coordination of airspace, landing zones, warning systems, and relevant countries, and cannot take off at any time with technology.
The founding team is quite suitable for doing this.
Matija Milenovic previously founded a satellite electric propulsion company, whose products were launched into orbit through SpaceX Transporter-3; Later, he participated in the production of supersonic drones and Ukrainian patrol missiles.
Jacob Balaj has conducted integrated testing for SpaceX Falcon 9/Heavy, Virgin Orbit LauncherOne, Masten lunar lander, and SpinLaunch. In his early years, he was also responsible for the MV-22 avionics quality inspection in the United States Marine Corps.
The company disclosed that it has completed a $3 million pre financing and will receive an additional $500000 in investment under YC standard terms upon joining YC S26. In addition, there is $1.25 million in Air Force research and development funding.
However, Hop Aero has not yet publicly disclosed its valuation, and third-party estimates of several million dollars have no reference value and cannot be used to determine its true financing pricing.
My judgment is:
Rook is a company worth tracking in this year's YC project, but it should now be understood as "a rocket cargo prototype that has received funding from the US military and completed some key tests", rather than a mature product that can already be shipped from Okinawa to Taiwan.
The next truly important milestones are only four:
Full scale free flight, hypersonic re-entry, precise field landing, and single mission cost.
Only by passing all four levels can Rook transform from a cool animation into a new mode of transportation.
