[Attorneys General from 44 U.S. States Jointly Oppose CFTC Regulation of Sports Prediction Markets] According to CNBC, Attorneys General from 44 U.S. states sent a joint letter to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) on Monday, stating that the agency does not have the authority to regulate contracts related to sports events on prediction market platforms. The letter was issued as the public comment period for the CFTC's first proposed rules on prediction market regulation ended Monday evening. These rules primarily target sports-related products on exchanges. Led by Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson, the coalition argued that the proposed rules exceed the CFTC's statutory authority, conflict with the Constitution, and are arbitrary and capricious. They called for the rules to be revised and clarified, asserting that sports betting should not be traded on designated contract markets but should instead be governed by state laws. Attorneys General from Florida, Georgia, New Hampshire, Missouri, and Texas did not sign the letter.
