**[Apple Sued Over App Store Crypto Wallet Scam, Users Lose Over $1.8 Million]**
BlockBeats News, July 28: Apple has been sued in the U.S. Northern District Court of California for allegedly failing to effectively prevent cryptocurrency scam apps on the App Store. Three users accused Apple's security review mechanism of negligence, which led them to download a fraudulent crypto wallet app, resulting in a total loss of over $1.8 million.
The lawsuit claims the app in question impersonated the Bitcoin wallet "Sparrow Wallet," though the official Sparrow Bitcoin Wallet has not been released on the iOS platform. After transferring Bitcoin to the fraudulent app, the three users suffered asset losses, with one losing approximately $875,000, another losing about $840,000, and the third losing around $120,000.
The plaintiffs argue that Apple has long promoted its strict App Store review process as a security advantage, claiming its closed ecosystem reduces risks of malware and scams. Therefore, they believe Apple should be held accountable for fraudulent apps on its platform. The lawsuit also cites public criticism from the founder of Sparrow Bitcoin Wallet, who stated that Apple had previously allowed counterfeit apps to appear on the App Store.
The three plaintiffs are demanding a jury trial, seeking to recover their losses and additional damages, while also requesting that Apple enhance risk warnings and security disclosures on the App Store.
Apple responded by stating that impersonating other apps violates App Store rules and that the company promptly removes such apps. Apple also noted that there are currently no counterfeit Sparrow Wallet apps on the App Store. According to data previously released by Apple, its review team rejected over 371,000 app submissions in 2025 for issues such as impersonation, spam, or misleading users.
