A woman purchased a stained white bag at a federal auction for just $995, unaware that she had acquired one of the most significant space artifacts in American history. The misidentified item was the Apollo 11 lunar sample bag used by Neil Armstrong to collect moon dust and rock during the first Moon landing in 1969. After testing confirmed the bag still contained traces of lunar material, NASA attempted to reclaim it, arguing that it had been mistakenly sold and should never have left government possession. A federal judge ruled that the purchase was legally valid, and the woman later sent the artifact to auction, where the $995 bag sold for $1.8 million.(Historic Vids)
