[SK Chairman's 'Century Divorce' Rejudged: Ex-Wife Awarded $640 Million, Nearly $300 Million Less] According to monitoring by Beating, the Seoul High Court in South Korea has rejudged the divorce property case of SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won. Chey Tae-won is required to pay his ex-wife Roh Soh-yeong ₩944 billion, approximately $640 million. This amount is ₩436.8 billion less than the second-instance ruling in 2024, a reduction of about 32%. The divorce and emotional compensation between the two had already taken effect, and this ruling only redefined the division of property. Previously, the second-instance ruling had included a sum of allegedly illegal funds from Roh Soh-yeong's father, former South Korean President Roh Tae-woo, as her contribution to SK's wealth growth. The South Korean Supreme Court deemed this money unprotected by law, overturned the property division portion, and ordered a retrial. After the retrial, the court still included Chey Tae-won's SK shares as joint property but recalculated the total assets and contributions of both parties. Roh Soh-yeong ultimately received one-third of the assets. The court used asset prices from April 2024, rather than directly valuing based on the latest stock prices following the AI boom. Chey Tae-won can retain his shares and pay in cash. Both parties still have the option to appeal again. [Original Link]
