[São Paulo Sues World and Amazon AWS, Seeking Approximately $47 Million in Damages] Odaily Planet Daily News: On Monday, the São Paulo Consumer Prosecutor's Office filed a lawsuit against Tools for Humanity, the company behind World, and its hosting service provider Amazon AWS, accusing them of misconduct in the collection of biometric data from consumers in São Paulo. The lawsuit estimates that over 400,000 people participated in World’s promotional activities in São Paulo. It demands the preservation of all data and metadata related to the data collection and calls for the suspension of any payments or benefits related to biometric data collection until the evaluation is completed. The lawsuit seeks to establish that the activities constitute abuse and demands compensation of 240 million Brazilian reais, approximately $47 million, for personal losses suffered by consumers. Prosecutors claim that World continued to issue crypto rewards through in-app transactions even after the National Data Protection Authority ordered a halt to such activities in February 2025. The Iris Parliamentary Investigation Committee report states that World focused its promotional efforts on peripheral and high-traffic areas to attract individuals facing socioeconomic challenges to submit their biometric data in exchange for crypto rewards. Prosecutors also allege that consumers were not informed of the project’s economic objectives or the risks associated with processing and storing data through AWS servers.
