[SpaceX Short Sellers Gain $15.5 Billion in Paper Profits and Continue to Increase Short Positions]
Odaily Planet Daily News: According to data from analytics firm Ortex Technologies as of Tuesday, investors shorting SpaceX (SPCX.O) stock have achieved approximately $15.5 billion in paper profits since SpaceX's IPO in mid-June, as its stock price has fallen below the IPO offering price. Short sellers profit by borrowing shares to sell them and then buying them back at a lower price. As SpaceX's stock price dropped from its post-IPO high of $225.64 to below the offering price of $135, they have increased their bearish bets on the company.
"There is currently no indication that short sellers are closing their positions in SpaceX," said Ortex co-founder Peter Hillerberg. "If anything, they are doubling down on their short positions," Hillerberg added.
Ortex data as of Tuesday shows that approximately 360 million SpaceX shares have been borrowed, accounting for about 56% of the float. Elon Musk stated last Friday, "Companies holding large short positions in SpaceX for the long term have a very low probability of survival." (Jin10)
