[Survey: Short Positions on the Korean Won Decrease Due to Optimism in Chips; Short Positions on the Thai Baht and New Taiwan Dollar Rise]
According to a report by Jinse Finance, on July 23, a Reuters survey revealed that as South Korea seeks to expand its foreign exchange market, demonstrates strong trade performance, and improves sentiment toward the Korean won, investors have significantly reduced their bearish bets on the currency. A two-week survey of 10 respondents showed that short positions on the Korean won fell to their lowest level in five months, while bearish bets on the Thai baht and New Taiwan dollar rose to multi-month highs.
A combination of factors has bolstered market participants' confidence in the Korean won: the introduction of 24-hour onshore USD/KRW spot trading, robust AI chip exports driving economic recovery, and stricter monetary policy. "As South Korean authorities open up the foreign exchange market, confidence in the won has also strengthened. South Korea's strong trade performance may also attract capital inflows," said Jeff Ng, Head of Asia Macro Strategy at Japan's Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation.
