[ECB Nagel: Rate Hike Needed in June if Inflation Outlook Does Not Improve] Jin10 Data reported on May 5 that ECB Governing Council member Nagel stated that as long as the consumer price outlook does not show significant improvement, the European Central Bank will need to raise interest rates in June. He noted that the decision not to tighten monetary policy last week to better assess the impact of the Iran war was a prudent move, but emphasized that this 'cautious wait-and-see approach should not be misunderstood as indecision.' Nagel mentioned the ECB's latest forecasts to be released next month, along with more information on the Middle East situation at that time, and stated, 'If the inflation outlook in these forecasts does not show significant improvement, this will support a rate hike,' consistent with his remarks last week. He added, 'We are fully aware of the risks to price stability and are ready to act at any time. The Governing Council has already demonstrated that it will act decisively when necessary.' Earlier the same day, Governing Council member Kazimir expressed a similar stance, stating that a rate hike is 'almost inevitable.' However, other officials have been more cautious, with Governing Council member Stournaras describing the risk of the economy falling into recession as 'a real concern.' Nagel also commented on Monday that while the ECB cannot prevent a sharp rise in energy costs, it can influence the medium-term trajectory of price growth. 'The longer the conflict lasts, the greater the risk of sustained high inflation if monetary policy does not take action.'
