[NCAA Urges CFTC to Suspend Prediction Markets Related to College Sports] According to CoinDesk, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has sent a letter to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), requesting a suspension of prediction market trading related to college sports. The NCAA believes that these prediction markets functionally resemble sports betting but bypass protective measures required of licensed sports betting institutions, such as age restrictions, advertising constraints, and integrity monitoring. Currently, the trading volume of college sports-related contracts on Polymarket has reached approximately $320 million. The association is concerned that these markets, which allow participation by users aged 18 and above, may attract college students and even athletes themselves. Prediction contracts targeting individual athletes are particularly likely to provoke coercion and harassment, posing "catastrophic" risks to student-athletes and the entire college sports ecosystem.
