[Bessent Believes the Fed Has Room to Modify the 2% Inflation Target in the Future] Jin10 News, December 23—U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent supports revisiting the Federal Reserve's 2% inflation target after the inflation rate consistently falls back to the target level of 2%. In an interview on the 'All-In Podcast,' Bessent stated: 'Once we return to a 2% inflation rate (which I believe is within reach), we can then discuss whether setting a target range would be wiser.' During the interview, Bessent suggested that discussions could focus on adjusting the inflation target to a range of 1.5%-2.5% or 1%-3%. The Federal Reserve officially adopted the 2% inflation target in 2012, a benchmark that has also been embraced by many central banks worldwide. Bessent pointed out that pursuing decimal-level precision is absurd, but he also warned that adjusting the target during periods of high inflation could create the impression that 'the target will keep being raised whenever it is exceeded.' This interview was recorded after the release of November's CPI data (on December 18).
