Netflix acquires Warner Bros., partners with OpenAI and Disney
----In the era of AI, the division between new and old media strategies
Two big news stories in the past few days:
One is that Netflix attempted to acquire Warner Bros. through a merger;
Another collaboration is between OpenAI and Disney, introducing IP into the AI interaction system.
In the long run, these two things are actually competing for the same thing: user attention.
But they are taking two completely different paths.
The logic of Netflix style mergers and acquisitions is to occupy more user time through a larger content library, stronger IP, and higher concentration. This is the standard answer in the era of streaming media.
But the problem is also very obvious:
The user's time is limited, but the content cost is rigid.
And when user growth slows down and duration competition enters zero sum, continuing to expand content scale is essentially just pushing the old path to its limit.
The collaboration between OpenAI and Disney does not seem like a traditional 'media collaboration'.
Because it is not about buying or distributing content, but about putting the IP into a new interactive system.
In this structure:
Disney is responsible for providing worldviews, characters, and emotional assets
OpenAI determines when, in what form, and in what user interactions these things appear
They are not competing with streaming companies for time for users to watch dramas, but rather creating new media experiences throughout the entire process
If two paths are put together, the comparison will be very clear:
Old media solves the problem of what users are watching
New media addresses what users are thinking and doing
The competition for user attention in new media is a whole process:
dialogue
Thinking
Before making a decision
During the action process (watching/interacting/co creating streaming media)
And old media is limited to the last step
Ai driven new media, content is no longer the endpoint, but only the called module.
Content companies are becoming more like suppliers of materials and worldviews,
And the new platform begins to determine how content participates in users' daily thinking and interaction.
The passive viewing entertainment of indoctrination is giving way to interactive participatory entertainment.
Entertainment has shifted from 'content consumption' to 'relationship and experience with content'.
This is precisely where AI x IP truly has long-term value.
Under such a structure, it is almost impossible for not only new startups like OpenAI to replicate Netflix's path.
The feasible direction has only one core principle:
Instead of grabbing existing entrances, embed a step that users cannot bypass to form a new entrance.
Especially in the field of entertainment:
Participatory rather than platform based
Fragmentation rather than long-term occupation
Having personality, memory, and relationships
Or combined with functionality to become a lubricant rather than the purpose itself
Opportunities exist in those attention segments that are not grand enough but specific enough.
Netflix's acquisition of Warner is a continuation of the attention logic of the old era through content scale; The collaboration between OpenAI and Disney is an attempt to rewrite the entry rules for attention. What the AI era truly changes is not the form of content, but who decides how content appears in users' lives or how users participate in content.
