SEC Chairman Paul Atkins stated at the sixth SEC Crypto Task Force roundtable meeting that if regulatory direction becomes unbalanced, the crypto ecosystem could 'turn into the most powerful financial surveillance framework in history.' He warned that if the government leans toward treating 'every wallet as a broker, every piece of software as an exchange, every transaction requiring reporting, and every protocol as a surveillance node,' the industry could become a 'financial panopticon.' SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce also emphasized at the meeting that privacy protection should be the norm, not seen as a signal of criminal intent, and urged the government to avoid forcing intermediaries for the sake of regulatory control or surveillance convenience.
