Stacks of lumber tower high at the Seattle Cedar Lumber Manufacturing Company's mill in Ballard, Seattle, 1919. Human for scale. Located just west of the Ballard Bridge, the mill was the largest in the area and a major hub of the city's timber industry. Logs brought to the site were cut into boards, then carefully stacked to dry for at least nine months before being sold. Some piles reached more than 50 feet tall, as seen in this photo where a workman stands partway up one of the stacks.(Historic Vids)
