The Government of Jamaica, through the Natural Disaster Relief Fund, allocated resources that allowed the National Water Commission to use emergency procurement to secure these 12 new water trucks. This step was necessary as many communities are still without water after Hurricane Melissa. Under the normal process, procurement can take close to a year, as seen with the previous units. However, using the emergency procedures, these trucks were approved and delivered in just over two weeks. This quicker turnaround ensures that communities in Westmoreland, St. Elizabeth, Hanover, St. James, and Trelawny can receive water support now. The situation highlights the need to speed up public-sector processes while still protecting public funds. The government is already working on this through initiatives like SPEED and by exploring how technology and artificial intelligence can help improve service delivery.(Andrew Holness)
