Twitter's vibe has been getting weird again lately. Those eye-catching topics always get the most traction, and Twitter is starting to feel more and more like Zhihu.
A bunch of people are debating the uselessness of academic qualifications: Look, those earning a9 aren’t necessarily highly educated.
Another group is teaching people how to become KOLs: Start a Twitter account, and you can easily make 1 million a year.
I remember back in the 2021 NFT bull market, there were a few high school students in Malaysia working as mods for some NFT projects. They were responsible for distributing project whitelists, which were super valuable at the time because there was so much dumb money floating around. Whitelists could easily bring in a few e in profit, so pre-launch whitelists were insanely hyped. Those high schoolers made some money off the whitelists, and Twitter even had a wave of people encouraging others to drop out of school. Now it feels like that trend is coming back.
I don’t know what happened to those kids now. Sure, making a few million as a high schooler is a lot of money, but does making that money have anything to do with whether or not you go to school? They just happened to make money before they grew up. Selling whitelists isn’t exactly a respectable thing to do anyway—if you did that in China, you’d probably end up in jail.
So, studying and making money aren’t mutually exclusive. I choose to do both.
Speaking of Twitter, my account has been active since 2021, and I don’t buy followers or boost my posts. But my ad revenue is basically zero. Why zero? Because I didn’t start my account to take ads. I just post stuff while researching things for myself. Plus, getting ads isn’t as simple as boosting followers or copying and pasting content. Those people teaching you how to do it only show you how to start an account, but they can’t teach you how to monetize it—because they haven’t made much money themselves.
Also, if you’re going to start an account, learn something worthwhile. Don’t bother copying those people who are all about running ad accounts. At best, you’ll just end up being another ad account.
Lastly, just a heads-up: keep a low profile for now.
