The major infrastructure of the x402 track is currently in a blank space. Although the "timing" taken away by the big market has temporarily silenced application layers such as Launchpad and intermediate layers such as Facilitators, it has given more build time windows to the underlying infrastructure layer;
@As a oracle project developed by the Solana ecosystem, switchboardxyz recently proposed to provide a data service layer for the x402 protocol. What specific steps should be taken?
1) In terms of technical architecture, Switchboard adopts a TEE trusted execution environment, which is different from traditional consensus models such as Chainlink and Pyth that rely on network verification. Data is directly transmitted to the chain based on secure enclaves;
2) In terms of protocol compatibility, Switchboard is compatible with the x402 protocol standard, allowing AI agents to directly initiate data requests through HTTP 402, complete authorization through on chain small payments, and receive data in real-time. The entire process does not require additional adaptation layers or intermediate contracts;
3) In terms of billing model, it breaks the traditional subscription model of oracle machines and supports pay per call - agents pay according to the number of calls and data points, and pay as much as they use, which is completely consistent with the design concept of x402 protocol's pay as you go policy;
4) A more radical point is that Switchboard has completely removed the API Key mechanism. In the traditional mode, calling data services requires registering, applying for keys, and managing permissions, which is a huge friction for agents. Now, with enough of the 402 transaction requests from users, they can instantly access any data source without registration or approval.
The question is, does the x402 protocol require a dedicated oracle service layer?
Let's first clarify a concept. In the x402 protocol architecture, the facilitator is responsible for payment facilitation - proxy payment, broadcast transactions, status verification, and solving the problem of "how money flows". The API services that the Agent actually calls, whether it is obtaining prices, performing calculations, or calling LLM inference, are provided by the Provider layer.
And what Switchboard wants to do is a special provider: a provider dedicated to providing trusted data services on the chain, constructing the core information layer for Agent value transmission.
Imagine, what if the Provider is a centralized API and the data is tampered with or the service crashes? In the Web2 scenario, these risks are covered by channel branding and legal contracts, but in the on chain execution environment, especially when it comes to complex DeFi operations, verifiable and on chain backed data is required.
If ERC-8004 solves the problem of buyer agent identity trustworthiness and reputation, then this type of oracle oriented provider needs to provide a layer of trust guarantee in seller (API) data trustworthiness verification.
Essentially, the x402 protocol builds the payment layer of the Agent service market, while Switchboard builds the data service layer. If the payment layer allows money to flow, the data service layer allows trusted data to flow.
Only by combining the two can Agenetic Economy be considered to have a complete infrastructure.
