Every now and then, there’s news about wallets like the OKX Wallet being 'hacked.' In fact, many of these so-called hacks happen in ways you’d never imagine. Since most people don’t understand the process, they just assume it’s OKX’s fault. For those of you who’ve been following me for a while, you know I used to work in security for a few years. Let me share a case that sounds absolutely mind-blowing. A long time ago, there was a sudden wave of users reporting that their OKX Wallets had been hacked. OKX teamed up with the police and a security company to investigate, and the final conclusion was this: after creating their wallets on OKX, many users took screenshots of their seed phrases. A lot of Android phones have an automatic photo upload feature to a certain cloud storage service. It just so happened that a programmer who understood the crypto space worked at that cloud storage company. One day, he accidentally noticed that some users had uploaded screenshots of their seed phrases. His eyes lit up, and he abused his position to scan all the images in the cloud storage, picked out the seed phrase screenshots, entered them one by one, and transferred the assets… So if I were a user, the process I’d understand is: I created a wallet on OKX, and then one day, all my funds were gone. So, everyone, please, please, PLEASE remember: always write down your seed phrase by hand and lock it in a safe or hide it at the bottom of your wardrobe! Never save it on any internet-connected device! And always enter your seed phrase manually—don’t copy and paste it—because some computers have viruses specifically designed to read your clipboard. As @余弦老师 (Yu Xian) said in his tweet, a wallet is just the user-facing terminal. Before that, there are many operations outside the wallet itself. So wallet security doesn’t necessarily mean your account is secure. It’s like keeping your money in a bank: even if the bank is super secure, if you lose your bank card, it can still be stolen.
