On Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court approved the Trump administration's request to temporarily halt the issuance of approximately $4 billion in SNAP food stamp benefits, which might become a turning point in accelerating the end of the U.S. government shutdown. This is the first time in 60 years that 42 million Americans are affected. It means the impact of the shutdown, caused by bipartisan disputes, has spread from the financial sector to the realm of public livelihood for the first time.
Food, after all, is not like research funding or homeland security budgets—it truly affects the lives of grassroots voters. This marks the first time a large-scale voter group has been genuinely hurt.
For both parties, this is a political consequence they cannot afford. It's already the last step of walking a tightrope. The Republicans can't let Trump take the blame for "starving 40 million Americans." The Democrats can't be accused of "dragging down public welfare spending with healthcare subsidies."
This kind of game, leveraging the plight of hungry citizens, is destined not to last long because the social stratification in the U.S. is very pronounced, and it's widely known that ordinary people generally have no savings. Those at the bottom might genuinely go hungry without food subsidies. If people can't afford to spend, offline food retail, pharmaceuticals, and essential consumer goods will all face pressure, which ironically might have an unexpected effect on reducing inflation.
So, when public anger rises and is amplified by public opinion, and as the shutdown drags on and U.S. debt liquidity worsens, internal and external pressures will force both parties to accelerate their compromise, and reopening the government won't be far off.
What we don't know is whether $BTC will rebound ahead of time this time.
