Great example of low level engineering by Bitcoin Core. secp256k1 is an ECDSA curve rarely used outside of Bitcoin, thus it's not a first class citizen for OpenSSL. Bitcoin devs wrote their own implementation that is now 8X faster, improving node sync performance. H/T @theStack (Jameson Lopp)
