According to Golden Finance, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced in a statement that its second in command, Gita Gopinath, will resign at the end of August and return to Harvard University. The IMF stated that IMF Managing Director Georgieva will appoint a successor to Gopinath at an appropriate time. Gopinath joined the IMF in 2019, becoming the organization's first female Chief Economist, and was promoted to First Vice President in January 2022. The US Treasury Department did not immediately comment on this. The selection of the IMF Managing Director is traditionally made by European countries, while the selection of the First Vice President is recommended by the US Treasury Department.
