Hanover has seen a 71% reduction in murders. This progress was not achieved by law enforcement alone. It is the result of a strong, active partnership between the police, Justices of the Peace (JPs), and civic leaders, a demonstration of the power of civic authority working alongside state authority.
At every official community visit, I receive a report from the officer in charge on public safety and order. Even when the figures are not where they should be, I am always encouraged by the pride officers take in their work, and the plans they have to improve outcomes.
If we truly want to eliminate crime, we must rebuild the chain of respect in our society, from the Custos and JPs, to parents, teachers, and leaders at all levels.
When JPs act as mediators, mentors, and coordinators in their communities, helping to redirect young people, resolving disputes, and supporting the police, they wield a force even greater than law, influence rooted in respect.
When we reconnect these links, we close the spaces where criminality thrives. We restore order. And we take back Jamaica, community by community.(Andrew Holness)
