According to the Asahi Shimbun on Tuesday, the ruling coalition in Japan may lose its majority in the Senate elections on July 20th, exacerbating the risk of political instability as Japan strives to reach a trade agreement with the United States. The ruling Liberal Democratic Party led by Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and its coalition partner Komeito may win about 35 seats in Sunday's election, lower than the 50 seats that the Liberal Democratic Party must retain to defend its majority. This report is based on telephone and online surveys conducted among voters on July 13-14, as well as a nationwide survey conducted by the newspaper's reporters. Due to the rising cost of living, including the soaring price of Japanese staple rice, the support rate of the Shigeru Ishiba government has declined. (Golden Ten)
