The Bank of Korea previously held a cautious attitude towards stablecoins, fearing that they may affect the effectiveness of monetary policy. Recently, South Korean banks and technology companies such as KB National Bank and Polaris Office have been intensively submitting trademark applications for Korean won stablecoins, forming a competitive situation where regulation has not yet arrived and trademarks have taken the lead. The trademark related to the Bank of Korea can be traced back to May 2023, and the progress is ahead of private institutions.
