It would be difficult to speak about our priorities as a region without acknowledging the broader global context in which we operate. From the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, to escalating tensions in the Middle East, the prolonged war in Ukraine, and underreported conflicts across Africa, each of these events reflects a world that is becoming more divided and fragile. These global realities have direct implications for our region, through rising energy costs, food insecurity, economic instability, and the pressures of irregular migration. In this moment of uncertainty, we must be resolute in preserving CARICOM as a zone of peace. We reaffirm our commitment to the international community, to advocate for de-escalation, to promote diplomacy, and to pursue lasting solutions grounded in dialogue and mutual respect. Over the coming days, we have much ground to cover. Some challenges may be too vast to solve in a single meeting. But we will do the work to prepare the next generation to cross the rivers we cannot. In the words of Jamaica’s first national hero, the Right Excellent Marcus Garvey, we are reminded to take advantage of every opportunity, and where there is none, to create it. Let us face the world asserting our identity. We are independent. We are strong. And together, we will fulfill the CARICOM vision of shared prosperity and unity for all our people.
