Nuclear Regulatory Commissioner Christopher Hanson (D) was fired by President Trump last Friday "without cause, contrary to existing law and longstanding precedent regarding removal of independent agency appointees." Senate confirmed him on 81-17 bipartisan vote with 31 Republicans voting Yes in 2024 to a 5-year term on the NRC, which was set to expire June 30, 2029. Hanson was first nominated to the NRC by Trump during his first term in 2020 and confirmed by the Senate by unanimous consent. President Biden designated him as NRC Chair in January 2021. Prior to his firing, Democrats had a 3-2 Democratic majority on the commission. Republican David Wright was designated in January by Trump as NRC chair.
