The latest draft guidelines from the European Data Protection Commission may make Bitcoin illegal in the European Union
According to http://(Bitcoin.com), Alexandre Stachtchenko, Chief Strategy Officer of French cryptocurrency exchange Paymium, has warned that the latest draft guidelines from the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) may make Bitcoin illegal in the European Union.
The draft considers blockchain public keys as personal data and requires them to be removable under certain conditions, but the characteristics of blockchain technology make the data tamper proof. EDPB explicitly states that 'technical infeasibility cannot be used as a reason for non-compliance with GDPR', and points out that if fine-grained data deletion cannot be achieved, it may be necessary to 'delete the entire blockchain'.
Stachtchenko criticized that this position is detached from technological reality and that the anonymization scheme is not recognized by existing regulations. The public consultation period ends on June 9th, and if the draft is passed, Bitcoin may be considered illegal due to its inability to meet data deletion requirements.
