Discuss ETH in detail and raise GAS limit to 60 million Many people's impression of ETH's TPS (number of transfers per second) is still at 15, but in reality, ETH's peak TPS has increased by 4x to 60 transactions per second. Although it is related to years of continuous optimization, the most direct reason can be attributed to the simple and crude adjustment of the GAS Limit from the previous 15 million limit to 36 million limit. Recently, ETH is about to raise its GAS limit again to 60 million. What is GAS Limit? Each of us needs to pay GAS when using ETH, and GAS Limit, as the name suggests, is the upper limit of GAS that an ETH block can accept. With more transactions that can be processed, the speed naturally increases. Looking at various scaling strategies, increasing the GAS limit is the most effective way to achieve immediate scaling. Moreover, this situation of increasing the fuel cost ceiling does not require a hard fork, as it is a dynamic parameter that PoS nodes can adjust within the existing rules of the protocol. In other words, allowing producers of each new block to adjust within a small range (± 1/1024) compared to the parent block is itself part of the consensus rule. This is different from Bitcoin fixing the block size at 1MB. So to increase the GAS Limit, as long as the PoS nodes vote (currently there are over 100w nodes in the entire network), there is a "signaling" process, and once the threshold is reached, the network will adopt the change to maintain compatibility among all nodes. Now the number of validators supporting 60 million GAS has reached 15%, and because this upgrade is voluntary, you can also see that there are still many validators, even staying at the previous two versions of 30 million. Increasing the GAS Limit does not necessarily mean that PoS nodes can earn more money, and is likely to earn less. After EIP-1559, Ethereum's Base Fee is directly burned, and nodes can only earn tips. However, the increase in GAS Limit means that as ETH burns more, tips are likely to decrease because the network is becoming more "unrolled". So the nodes willing to support 60M are quite selfless. Finally, as an aside, the Ethereum community has recently even proposed EIP-9698, which calls for a 100 fold increase in fuel cost caps (from 36 million to 3.6 billion) within four years, with the goal of achieving 2000 transactions per second, targeting Solana 😂 This is indeed a bit exaggerated. Increasing the GAS Limit can indeed infinitely improve the performance of PoS nodes under the premise of unlimited performance. But, you know what I'm going to say, obviously the server and physical host performance of PoS nodes is not infinite, especially ETH has to take care of over 100000 validators, which is a whole 10000 times worse than some public chains' 100+validators. Moreover, even if it is increased to 60M this time, which is only nearly doubled, it is still thanks to the Pectra upgrade that there is a chance to enter the voting process. According to Ethpandaops' research, increasing the 60M gas limit will allow 90% of blocks to be discovered for the first time within 1016 milliseconds, slightly increasing block propagation time compared to the past, which is within an acceptable range. However, considering that 66% of nodes in the network need to see the block and its related blob within 4 seconds for the block to be considered valid, the theoretical value measured on the test network for this GAS Limit can only reach up to 150 million. So, in the short term, EIP-9698 is indeed impossible. Of course, if Ethereum really implements the "big and small node" system in the future, which means 2048 ETH as the large node and 32 ETH as the small node, there is a chance to continue to increase the GAS Limit. So, although I always say that ETH GAS Price has fallen below historical lows again and Noble Chain is no longer around, there may be an objective fact that Ethereum itself is getting faster and cheaper.
