Green Flare has announced plans to establish 53 MW of Bitcoin mining operations in Nigeria, utilising flared gas to produce Bitcoin while reducing harmful methane emissions. 🔥🇳🇬 By using more efficient combustion processes, these 53 MW sites can avoid 0.614 Mt CO₂e/year using GWP20 estimates. That represents 1.5% of the entire Bitcoin network's total annual emissions of 39.8 Mt CO₂e. Or the annual equivalent of removing 127,675 cars from the road. These mining sites alone will be a substantial contributor toward making the Bitcoin network carbon-neutral. Nigeria flares significant amounts of gas (~7–8 billion m³/year, per World Bank data). This represents an enormous amount of wasted energy. Bitcoin mining operations have the potential here to significantly reduce emissions and health hazards for local populations while generating economic value. Picture by @GreenFlareCo.
