Progress in US European negotiations: EU trade negotiators have acknowledged that they are unlikely to overturn US President Trump's "reciprocal" tariffs and warned European governments that deeper concessions are needed to avoid a full-scale trade war. The European Commission has informed member states that the 10% "equivalent" tariffs imposed by Trump on almost all goods may be retained, although negotiators still hope to lower the rates. This assessment marks a significant shift in the EU's attitude towards negotiations. Bj ö rn Seibert, the chief staff member of von der Leyen, made a pessimistic assessment of the negotiations to EU ambassadors on Monday. Considering the US position, Sebert proposed a potential agreement framework similar to that reached by the UK, suggesting setting low tariffs or tax-free quotas for sensitive export products such as cars (subject to a 25% tariff due to "national security"). Trump has threatened to take similar measures against products such as semiconductors and pharmaceuticals. There are also significant internal divisions within the EU, with France being the only country that opposes unilateral concessions and accepts a 10% tariff. Italian Prime Minister Meloni played a key mediating role in the negotiations. However, it is estimated that there will be new variables in the negotiation process after the International Trade Court suspends the equivalent tariffs as soon as possible.
