According to Cointelegraph, blockchain detective ZachXBT stated that law enforcement mistakenly detained former Yuga Labs security researcher Sam Curry for a 2022 cyber theft case that stole approximately $1.1 million worth of BAYC NFTs. ZachXBT stated that he has identified the wallet behind the scam and associated it with an X account that has now been deleted. In December 2022, an anonymous attacker stole 14 Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs, with each NFT trading for approximately $86000 at the time. The law enforcement department subsequently "mistakenly reviewed OpenSea's logs, which included [Curry]'s home IP address, and used this address to mistakenly list him as a suspect".
