🇵🇾 Paraguay is facing a potential energy crisis as cryptocurrency mining companies flock to the country for its cheap hydroelectric power!
The Paraguayan Industrial Union (UIP) warns that if demand continues to rise without an increase in power generation, a collapse could occur as early as 2029.
Julio Fernández, head of the UIP's Center for Economic Studies, raised concerns, stating, "Itaipu and Yacyreta are no longer enough. We're consuming more than one Itaipu turbine per year."
Despite the Itaipu dam's significant output, the UIP believes urgent action is needed to prevent blackouts. One proposal includes leveraging an Argentine natural gas export deal to build new power infrastructure, potentially earning Paraguay 400 million annually!
Even with strict mining policies, companies like Hive Digital are planning to expand their capacity by 400%.
