One of the most important lessons of World War II is the imperative for the allied powers of the free world to stand firm against any forces that encourage and promote dark ideologies of terror and hatred. Today, we mark Israel’s Holocaust Remembrance Day on the soil of Auschwitz – soil soaked with the blood of our murdered sisters and brothers. Yet even today, 80 years since the Holocaust, the Jewish people and the Jewish state of Israel continue to endure attacks on multiple fronts—attacks funded and commanded by the Iranian web of hate and terror. We must broaden our circle of partnership against this axis of evil. Iran threatens not only Israel but global stability, and the nations of the world must cooperate to halt its advance. With a broken heart, I remind us all that although we swore after the Holocaust, “Never again,” today—right now—the souls of dozens of Jews are once more caged in dungeons, starved, as Janusz Korczak described life in the ghetto, “thirsting for water and freedom”. Still, fifty-nine of our brothers and sisters remain in the hands of terrorist murderers in Gaza, victims of a horrifying crime against humanity. The return of the hostages is a universal human duty; from this place I call upon the entire international community to rally together and put an end to this humanitarian atrocity. From remarks I delivered in a joint statement with my friend, President @AndrzejDuda of Poland.
