On July 20 at 3 AM Beijing time, the 2026 World Cup will decide the ultimate champion between Argentina and Spain. On one side is Argentina, attempting to defend their title and aiming for back-to-back World Cup victories, while on the other side is Spain, who has maintained stability and advanced to the finals with an almost impenetrable defense.
Spain's path to the finals has showcased great stability. After entering the knockout stage, they defeated Austria, Portugal, Belgium, and France, managing to control the game's tempo against several strong teams. Especially in the semifinals against France, Spain did not give Mbappe's frontline much counterattack space, ultimately advancing with a score of 2:0. They conceded only 1 goal in 7 matches, achieving 6 clean sheets; their solid defense and strong midfield control have been the backbone of their journey to the end.
On the other hand, Argentina's progression has been filled with thrill and comebacks. Once in the knockout stage, they hardly won any match easily. Against Cape Verde and Egypt, Argentina narrowly triumphed with a score of 3:2; in the quarterfinals against Switzerland, they scored twice only in the latter stage of extra time; in the semifinals against England, they were still behind in the 85th minute but relied on Messi's consecutive assists and goals from Enzo and Lautaro to turn the game around.
Additionally, this final carries a storyline reminiscent of a movie script.
In a charity shoot in 2007, a young Messi was bathing a baby Yamal. At that time, no one would have thought that nearly 20 years later, the two would face each other for the first time in a World Cup final.
Now, Messi is 39 years old, and Yamal has just turned 19. One could be playing in his last World Cup match, while the other stands on the brink of his own era. An old photo spanning nearly 20 years also adds a layer of significance about the transition of eras to this final.

Before the AIs predict who will lift the World Cup trophy, let's review their performances in the two semifinals (related content: Semifinals AI prediction chaos: Is France stable? The fate of the England-Argentina battle uncertain).
Semifinal Predictions Mostly Fail, Gemini Hits Twice
In the World Cup quarterfinals, all 6 AIs accurately predicted that France, Spain, England, and Argentina would advance. However, in the semifinals, the overall predictive performance of the AIs was somewhat "subpar."
In the matchup between France and Spain, ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, DeepSeek, and QW all unanimously favored France to advance, predicting a 2:1 victory. The five models believed that France could exploit the space left by Spain's attacking full-backs and resolve the match with quick counterattacks. However, France never delivered the anticipated counterattacks and was instead firmly controlled by Spain, ultimately exiting with a score of 0:2. The only model that chose Spain, Gemini, correctly predicted the advancement direction but forecasted that the match would go to penalties, failing to guess the process.
In the England vs. Argentina match, the 6 AIs split evenly in their predictions. Grok, DeepSeek, and QW supported England, while ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude favored Argentina. In the end, Argentina completed a comeback with a score of 2:1, with all three models supporting Argentina correctly predicting their advancement direction, and only Gemini hitting the score as well.
After the two semifinals, Gemini became the only model to accurately predict both finalist teams and provided the most accurate prediction of this round. However, heading into the final championship battle, all 6 AIs aligned once again.
Final Consensus: All 6 AIs Favor Spain
PPP prediction market tool monitoring shows that in the predict.fun event "World Cup Final Argentina vs. Spain," the probability of Argentina winning is currently reported at 27%; the probability of a draw is 32%; the probability of Spain winning is 43%. Additionally, including extra time and penalties, Spain's probability of winning the championship is 59%, while Argentina's is 41%.

The championship probabilities given by the prediction market do not differ significantly, but the positions of the 6 AIs are highly consistent, with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, and QW all favoring Spain to win.
Why Do AIs Agree on Spain Winning the Championship?
The reasons why AIs favor Spain are highly consistent: defense, midfield control, and physical reserves.
Spain's most convincing advantage is their nearly impenetrable defense in this World Cup. In their first 7 matches, they conceded only 1 goal and managed to limit Portugal, Belgium, and France after entering the knockout stage. Although Argentina has a stronger offensive power, it will find it challenging to gain as much open counterattack space against Spain's compact formation.
Midfield control determines how the match may unfold. Rodri organizes the attacks, Olmo consistently enters the flank, and Yamal can continuously stretch Argentina's defense along the wing. Argentina excels at compressing the central area and quickly completing attacks through Messi, Alvarez, and Lautaro, but Spain has the capability to maintain long periods of ball possession, reducing the transition between offense and defense, making it hard for Argentina to enter their familiar rhythm.
Physical reserves are another variable commonly mentioned by AIs. Spain finished their semifinals a day earlier than Argentina, and their advancement process was relatively smooth; Argentina had to play a full 120 minutes against Switzerland and then battled England until injury time. If the match goes into extra time, Spain's younger lineup and better rotation may become the decisive advantage for the championship.
5 AIs Do Not See Spain Winning in 90 Minutes
Although the direction for the championship is completely agreed upon, there are still different judgments among the 6 models about how Spain will win the match.
The model with the best performance in the semifinals, Gemini predicts that both teams will finish regular time 1:1, with extra time remaining stalemated, and ultimately the championship will be decided via a penalty shootout, with Spain winning in the end.
ChatGPT, Grok, and QW provide similar predictions, all leaning toward a 1:1 draw in regular time. Argentina is capable of leveling the score thanks to Messi's creativity and frontline efficiency, but once the match goes into extra time, Spain's greater physical reserves and depth will gradually show, ultimately securing a win in the extra 30 minutes.
Claude does not predict a specific score but believes the match will be locked in a low-scoring range (1:1, 1:0, and 0:0). It emphasizes the cautious atmosphere of the final, where both sides may maintain equilibrium for a long time until a set piece, counterattack, or individual performance breaks the deadlock.
DeepSeek is the only one leaning toward Spain solving the match within 90 minutes. It believes Spain will continue their previous defensive performance, limiting Argentina's attacks, and will win directly by 2:0 or 2:1.
Before the semifinals, all 5 AIs unanimously predicted France's advancement, only to be collectively proven wrong when Spain won 2:0. This time, will Spain fulfill its overall strength advantage, or will Argentina once again drag the match into familiar peril and find a chance for a comeback?
