Anxiety and Opportunities in the Age of AI

AI summarizes in 5 seconds.

A series of events I've witnessed recently has left me feeling quite emotional.

First, there are internal screenshots showing that some tech companies in the country have begun to conduct large-scale layoffs: some have cut more than half of their department, while others have closed entire branches in certain cities.

Some layoffs have even triggered collective actions from internal employees—because I was once a software engineer, I can deeply empathize with the common traits of such workers: they can endure, they can suffer, they can hold on. Such workers rarely exhibit such intense behavior. It must take a profound pain to trigger their helplessness and inability to cope, igniting such emotions.

The reason for the layoffs is simple: AI is currently capable of replacing these positions on a large scale and with extreme efficiency, turning what were once exalted and enviable positions into the most vulnerable and defenseless targets.

I wrote in a previous article that after I first used AI extensively, I immediately felt that the positions of my colleagues around me could actually be completely replaced by AI. The only reason they haven't been laid off yet is simply that the bosses are not yet comfortable or daring enough to fully trust AI with those tasks.

But I believe that day will come soon, and many people will have little time left.

The day before yesterday, the news of Zhang Xuefeng's early passing flooded my social media. Without discussing his profession and the controversy it sparked, just the age of 41 at which he passed away is quite poignant—no matter how much wealth one accumulates, life ceasing abruptly at such an age is far from the beautiful picture of enjoying wealth and status that people expect.

Yesterday, I saw another video of a young girl leaping from the roof of a tech building, ending her life in a hurry.

It is said this was also due to unbearable work pressure.

In these examples, whether it is a seemingly affluent celebrity or a resilient middle-class individual, life is not easy for either; they all face pressures that outsiders cannot imagine, and the outcomes are all lamentable.

I don't know if it's because I'm getting older or gaining more experience, or if the advancement of the times has exceeded my previous imagination, but in recent years, I find myself occasionally feeling pressure and anxiety.

However, whenever I encounter such emotions, I always take a break, read a book, especially the works of predecessors.

I discovered that the greatest benefit of reading predecessors' works is learning to distinguish between noise and what is truly worth focusing on.

In this era we inhabit, the speed and intensity of disruption and innovation far surpass any period in human history; new things are rapidly emerging every moment, and our life trajectories can unexpectedly be interrupted and overturned by new developments at any time.

Moreover, our communicative environment is rife with various anxious pieces of information...

Now, when I come across this type of narrative and information, I usually just glance and if I don't find anything valuable, I immediately discard it, refusing to fall into the void constructed by such articles and information, wasting my attention and energy on them.

But if one delves into every piece of such information without discernment, it will surely lead to increasing oppression, suffocation, and even approaching a breakdown.

And a person who is emotionally suppressed and mentally broken has lost the most precious thing, which is probably something AI will never possess: emotional value and spiritual motivation—these two things might prove to be far more important and vital in the future than we can imagine today.

I even believe that in a future where we truly live among silicon-based beings, the most valuable things for carbon-based humans may be these two aspects. In that era, a person who is spiritually vibrant, emotionally healthy, and physically well will have far more advantages than someone who merely possesses technology or skills, or the "all-powerful" AI that lacks humanity.

AI will undoubtedly change our society, and each of us will certainly bear the impact of AI, but at the same time, I also believe that each of us will benefit from the immense changes brought by AI.

Therefore, the upcoming development of AI will be both a blessing and a curse for everyone, somewhat akin to flipping a coin, with opportunities on both sides.

But I believe that those who are spiritually vibrant and emotionally healthy will have a much higher probability of landing on the positive side.

"Aside from sickness, the pain you feel is almost entirely brought about by your values, rather than existing reality."

Since pain is chosen by values, then optimism can also be a choice. In the face of AI, we can actively choose a value system of "partner" instead of "competitor."

From an investment perspective, AI itself is a huge new asset class. Anxious people see "chaos," while optimistic people see "newness." Rather than fearing change, it’s better to leverage AI’s information processing capabilities to discover trends early and convert uncertainty into investment windows.

Thus, I always believe we must live our lives well, holding on until that day, until we see that day.

Whenever I chat with friends now, I always say:

Right now, the most important thing financially is to avoid debt as much as possible; not being in debt can significantly reduce our mental stress; materially, the most important thing is to eliminate blind consumerism, which can keep us away from the dangers of debt; then calmly enjoy every day.

No matter what, we must not lose hope; we must take care of our bodies, unload the pressures and anxieties within us, and live until the day when silicon-based life coexists with us.
